The National Heavy Vehicle Braking Strategy has been in development since 2002 when it was established by the Standing Committee on Transport.
CVIAQ is represented in this process by CEO Mr Brett Wright who sits on the Federal Technical Liaison Group as the CVIAA representative.
The National Transport Commission has now released their report on the Strategy. This document is available from: http://www.ntc.gov.au/filemedia/Reports/NationalHVBrakingStratNTCNov08.pdf
The strategy is projected to unfold between now and 2020 and will set the timetable for the introduction of new technology for the road transport sector.
Innovations to be introduced by the strategy include:
Variable Load Proportioning
Antilock Braking System (ABS) for trucks and trailers
Electronic Braking System (EBS) for combination vehicles
Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
The implementation of the Strategy will involve changes to ADR 35 and ADR 38 and will include a myriad of smaller details ensuring smooth adoption of the technology. Members will be consulted on proposed changes and kept informed of developments.
The NTC has also announced support and funding for an industry led Brake Balance Code of Practice and public website resource to help operators align brake technologies used in heavy vehicle combinations, as well as help brake suppliers, dealers and engineers identify poor performing combinations and provide guidelines and tools to improve brake performance.
