The Department of Infrastructure has released the Draft National Road Safety Strategy 2011 – 2020 for comment. Comment is due by 11th Feb 2011.The broad aim of the strategy is to reduce the road toll by 30% by 2020. To achieve this, the strategy is looking at a number of areas that will have an effect on our industry.
The areas impacting directly on the heavy vehicle industry are as follows:
More people complying with the speed limit
Speed limits that are appropriate with the design and function of the road
Regulation to speed up the adoption of safety features in new vehicles
Strong market demand for vehicles that provide more effective protection in the event of a crash
A younger vehicle fleet
Some of the steps to achieve this are as follows:
Greater safety features in new vehicles such as Advanced Emergency Braking Systems for heavy and light vehicles.
Introducing in-vehicle technologies to minimise driver distractions (driver management systems).
Implementing on-board technologies for trucks to enforce vehicle load limits and help maintain optimal driving performance.
Working with industry to evaluate mandating on safety ratings of all new vehicles.
Implementing international standards to improve light commercial vehicle safety.
Introducing systems which automatically notify emergency services wirelessly of the identity and position of a vehicle when its crash system deploys (for example, when airbags activate).
Address impaired driving through enhanced RBT and drug testing programs and reviewing BAC limits applying to some licence categories
