02/09/08  Career Opportunities on Show at the 2008 CVIAQ Schools to Industry Tour

CVIAQ member companies, Mercedes Benz Commercial Vehicles Rocklea and refrigerated body manufacturer, Scully Trucks turned it on for Brisbane South West District secondary school students in providing an enjoyable and informative day showcasing all the career options available to students within their businesses during the 2008 CVIAQ Schools to Industry Tour.

The tour, held on Tuesday 26th August, was the fourth of its kind to be jointly organised by CVIAQ and community partnership group, South West Career Connect and was arguably the best to date. The host companies, a heavy vehicle dealership and a refrigerated body manufacturer proved to be the right mix in providing students with the majority of career options that the commercial vehicle industry has to offer.

Students and teaching staff were able to see activities involving many of the trades in the manufacturing and service & repair sectors as well as sales, spare parts and administrative operations. Students showed great interest when directly engaged by workshop staff promoting their skills and tools of trade.

Many well deserved thanks to Mr John Grossman and Mr Barry Field from Mercedes Benz Commercial Vehicles Rocklea and Mr Mike Hancock from Scully Trucks for giving up their valuable time and organising staff to host the students and conduct the tours. A special thank you is directed to Mercedes Benz Commercial Vehicles for providing lunch to all participants on the day.

Both companies ensured that students would remember the day by providing career and business information packs along with a variety of company memorabilia such as caps, pens, water bottles and coolers displaying company insignia.

The 2008 CVIAQ Schools to Industry Tour continues the tradition established by previous tours in providing a vehicle for students to make informative choices about apprenticeships, traineeships and work experience within the commercial vehicle industry as they prepare to leave school and enter the workforce.

The school visits are a part of the ongoing CVIAQ commitment in addressing the present skills shortage being experienced by its members.
